Kayaking on the Gogebic Range

The Gogebic Range is fast becoming a destination that rivals any other area in the Midwest for kayaking!  Ironwood is at the center of one of the prime kayaking and canoeing destinations with extreme class 5-6 waterfalls, calm inland lakes and streams and the pristine waters of Lake Superior.

In early spring, whitewater enthusiasts will come to enjoy the playful class 2-3 rapids of the Montreal River canyon.  Others will look to "creek-boat" the steep drops and falls of the Black and Presque Isle Rivers, among others.  As river levels drop, and the grass and trees become green, recreational and sea kayakers will explore the rugged shoreline of Lake Superior, from Superior Falls on the Montreal River to the final falls of the Presque Isle River in the Porcupine Mountains and beyond.

Special kayaking events in the area include the Gile Flowage Kayak Festival, the Gile Triathlon (kayaking, trail biking, and running), the Montreal River West Branch whitewater recreational releases, and the kayak seminars and clinics held periodically.  Contact Whitecap Kayak for details on these events.  Guided trips and instructions can also be arranged through Whitecap Kayak.  www.whitecapkayak.com
