GOGEBIC derived from the Chippewa Indian word “Agogebic”  - popular translation is “Where trout rising make ring upon the water”.  Other translation is “A body of water hanging on high”.

IRONWOOD is named after James Wood, discoverer of the Norrie mine.  His nickname was “Iron”.

BESSEMER was named after Sir Henry Bessemer, English inventor of a steel and iron manufacturing process.

RAMSAY was named after a Scottish chemist

WAKEFIELD was named after George M. Wakefield, a financier originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

MARENISCO was named after Mary Relief Niles Scott, wife of one of the early pioneers of the settlement.

WATERSMEET derived from the two words, “waters” & “meet”. The Indian word for Watersmeet is Ticonderoga.
